The Challenge
Warner Music France needed a flexible editorial design system for a collection of genre-based compilations spanning disco, funk, soul and music from the 1980s. Each release needed to reflect the atmosphere and visual character of its respective musical era while remaining immediately recognisable as part of one coherent collection. The challenge was to translate musical nostalgia into a contemporary and premium visual language without relying on predictable retro references or conventional compilation artwork.
The Solution
Bureau Clavius developed a modular editorial system based on a consistent grid, a precise typographic hierarchy and a recurring cover structure. Every compilation received a custom genre-specific wordmark, an individual art direction and its own colour-coded vinyl treatment. This allowed each release to establish a distinct identity while remaining visually connected to the wider series. The design system was applied across album covers, back covers, vinyl labels and promotional assets, creating a scalable framework that could be extended to future editions.
